Perguntada se existem planos para o Revamp começar a trabalhar em um terceiro álbum, Floor disse que um sucessor para o álbum do ano passado, “Wild Card”, ainda está “longe”. Ela explicou: “Isso é lamentável para o Revamp, mas eu não posso fazer as coisas ao mesmo tempo, eu percebi isso. Não posso trabalhar em um álbum do Revamp enquanto estiver em turnê com o Nightwish. E também não poderia fazer qualquer coisa com o Nightwish enquanto estivesse em turnê com o Revamp. As coisas precisam ser feitas em períodos. Assim, no tempo de um ano, o Revamp esteve na ativa, mas teve que parar, porque já começamos a ensaiar para o novo álbum com o Nightwish e vamos começar a gravar muito em breve, o que será o meu foco. Talvez eu possa fazer pequenos projetos paralelos aqui e ali, se não tomar muito da minha energia, criativamente falando. Mas fazer um novo álbum, é claro, vai exigir muito do meu tempo e esforço, e seria bom se concentrar nisso inteiramente. Então, vamos ver o que o futuro traz. Eu não tomei qualquer decisão de quando e onde, e nem o resto da banda. Quer dizer, nós somos em seis pessoas e todo mundo tem o seu tempo e horários e talvez as coisas vão acontecer. Mas o sucesso do Revamp é evidente. Nós vendemos vários álbuns, fizemos muitas turnês, e onde quer que tocamos, temos uma resposta muito positiva, e isso é algo que seria muito bom em manter…”
Ela acrescentou: “Estou muito feliz com o que posso proporcionar para o Nightwish, mas provavelmente vou querer continuar a escrever coisas. E que poderá assumir muitas formas”.

PlanetMosh conducted an interview with Dutch singer Floor Jansen (NIGHTWISH, REVAMP) at this year’s edition of the Bloodstock Open Air festival, which was held August 7-10 at Catton Hall, Walton-On-Trent, West Midlands, United Kingdom. You can now listen to the chat using the audio player below.
Asked if there are any plans for REVAMP to begin work on a third album, Floor said that the follow-up to last year’s “Wild Card” was “a long way off.” She explained: “That is unfortunate for REVAMP, but I cannot do things at the same time, I realize that. So I cannot work on a REVAMP album when I tour with NIGHTWISH. And I cannot do any NIGHTWISH stuff when I’m touring with REVAMP. Things have to be [done] in periods. So the REVAMP period of one year has been there, and it will have to stop, because I’ve already started rehearsing for the new album with NIGHTWISH and we’ll start recording pretty soon, and that will be my focus. I can maybe do little side projects here and there, if it doesn’t take too much of my creative energy. But making a new album, of course, will [require a lot of my time and effort], and it would be nice to focus on that entirely. So we’ll see what the future brings. I have not made any decisions of when and where, and neither did the rest of the band. I mean, we’re six people and everyone has their time and schedules and maybe things will happen. But the success of REVAMP is clear. We’ve sold a lot of albums, we’ve done very good tours, and wherever we play, we get a very positive response, and that’s something that would be very nice to keep…”
She added: “I’m very happy with what I can bring into NIGHTWISH, but I will probably want to keep on writing things. And that can take many forms as well.”

Segue abaixo algumas curiosidades não somente sobre o ReVamp, mas sobre seu trabalho como fotógrafo e designer gráfico.
1. Para começar, quais são as suas maiores influências de design no mundo do entretenimento (música, cinema, TV, livros, etc.) e como essas influências ajudaram a melhorar seus trabalhos?
Stark: Basicamente, tudo o que já existe é uma influência. Como designer, eu continuo tentando misturar essas coisas para criar algo a partir disso. Uma coisa que eu sempre amei é a arte fotográfica do fotógrafo holandês Anton Corbijn. Algumas das maiores capas de álbum do U2 e Depeche Mode são seu trabalho.
2. Como você relaciona a ilustração e fotografia à tipografia em seus trabalhos com música?
Stark: Bem, depende do tipo de música música e da messagem que se deseja passar. O mais importante é que os sentimentos que a música e a imagem passam têm de ser os mesmos. Então, isso também permite que o designer decida que tipo de mídia utilizar a fim de passar a mensagem da forma mais clara possível.
3. Dentre todas as suas criações gráficas e fotográficas, qual delas é a mais importante para você?
Stark: Eu abri a minha própria empresa Stark Artworks no ramo de design gráfico e fotografia, em setembro de 2013. Desde então, meu trabalho favorito é uma fotografia do prefeito de Masstricht bebendo chá pela manhã e lendo o jornal em seu enorme escritório. Uma cena simples com algo épico acontecendo. Esse ensaio fotográfico foi realizado em poucos minutos e, parte dele, se tornou a imagem-chave para a Stark Artworks.
Ambos os álbuns do ReVamp com certeza foram dois dos meus projetos favoritos no estúdio NI I, em que trabalhei durante sete anos. Especialmente no segundo album, o “Wild Card”. Eles me deixaram tomar conta do projeto do início ao fim. Com certeza foi algo muito divertido!
Mas, como fotógrafo e designer, eu estou sempre à procura de algo novo. Os meus melhores trabalhos ainda estão por vir!
4. Como foi criar a arte gráfica e fotográfica dos álbuns do ReVamp e quais os maiores desafios e/ou dificuldades que eles apresentaram?
Stark: Bom, a princípio, a arte da capa era muito diferente. Uma capa para o album foi finalizada antes que o ensaio fotográfico ocorresse. Uma imagem que passava uma sensação de serenidade e abandono, além de não ter a Floor ou a própria banda nela. Essa capa não foi cativante o bastante, e percebemos que os fãs adorariam ter “sua Floor” na capa. Nós elaboramos um conceito completamente novo durante o ensaio fotográfico para o material promocional.
Ainda assim, a imagem antiga ainda pode ser vista no meio do encarte. O quarto vazio com o coração na balança. Originalmente, essa imagem deveria ser a capa.
5. Que tipo de material você pode utilizar quando você estava criando as imagens do Wild Card? Entregaram-lhe somente a idéia inicial, mostraram as músicas como forma de inspirá-lo ou deixaram tudo nas suas mãos?
Stark: Durante o processo de criação da arte, eu não ouvi nenhuma das músicas. A Floor descreveu o conceito do álbum durante o nosso ensaio fotográfico. Eu captei toda a ideia rapidamente. No entanto, o coração sangrando foi a parte mais difícil. Não foi fácil obter ou fazer um. Eu liguei para diversos matadouros procurando por um coração de porco porque eles se parecem muito com o coração humano. Mas, por alguma razão, eles não estavam dispostos a nos fornecer um e não tínhamos muito tempo sobrando por termos tido de mudar o conceito da capa. Então, eu encontrei algumas imagens de corações humanos e juntei vários pedaços destas imagens a fim de criar um coração que parecesse um pouco aberto. Para as partes que sangravam, eu usei apenas geléia de cereja e de morango que eu ainda tinha na geladeira! Você pode imaginar que isso foi divertido.
6. Sobre as imagens promocionais da Floor para o Wild Card: Você teve total liberdade de imaginação ao criar as poses ou todas elas foram indicadas pela Floor?
Stark: Até onde me lembro, nós gastamos um dia trabalhando nas fotos do album e nas fotos promocionais, além de vários figurinos. A Floor é uma profissional, então ela improvisou nas poses a maior parte do tempo. Então, para mim, como um fotógrafo, foi incrível. O que eu adorei é o fato da imagem mais espontânea que surgiu ter sido a do dedo, no CD. (Espero que não tenha sido especialmente para mim.)
7. Você já teve algum conflito criativo com alguma banda com que trabalhou por causa de algum “choque” entre o seu conceito e o conceito da música?
Stark: Eu não fiz muitas artes de album no decorrer dos anos. Mas não houve qualquer problema durante aquele período. Eu acho que sou capaz de captar a essência da ideia de cada um rapidamente. Eu acho, inclusive, que isso é crucial para esse tipo de trabalho. É tudo uma questão de prazos. Então, é melhor não disperdiçar o tempo de ninguém!
8. Como foi o primeiro contato com a Floor e o que ela tem de diferente no trabalho dela?
Stark: Conheci a Floor pela primeira vez em um corredor, quando chegava na empresa em que eu trabalhava. Ela estava conversando com um colega de trabalho e eu pensei que ela fosse uma amiga dele. Eu disse “Bom dia” e segui reto. Mais tarde, eu soube quem ela era e me lembrei que já a havia visto na TV com o After Forever. Acho que foi mais cedo, naquele dia. (Risos)
Como você sabe, o encanto dela como cantora, de forma geral, é bem enérgico e incrivelmente forte. Mas eu adoro os momentos em que ela é apenas a Floor, agindo naturalmente e sem salto alto. Talvez seja porque, nesses momentos, ela não é mais alta do que eu! (Risos)
9. Sendo o Design e a fotografia as suas paixões, quais foram as suas maiores dificuldades no início da carreira?
Stark: Acredito que, antes de mais nada, conhecer todos os softwares que ajudam a converter as suas idéias e visões em arte digital. Isso se torna uma ferramenta cuja prática tem de se tornar tão natural quando andar de bicicleta. Mas isso leva tempo, anos e, acima de tudo, experiência. E experiência traz confiança. Eu tenho de ser confiante. Por que como posso criar ou visualizar a imagem de alguém se eu não tenho certeza sobre a minha? Eu acho que é isso.
10. Olhando o seu site, é vísivel que você não trabalha exclusivamente com o mundo da música. Sobre essa vasta área, existe algum tipo de trabalho ainda não realizado, mas que você realmente almeja realizar?
Stark: Eu amo os projetos relacionados à música, mas eles surgem com menos frequência do que os relacionados ao design gráfico ou outras ensaios fotográficos. Geralmente, eu faço alguns trabalhos de retoque para fotógrafos que trabalham com música ou para revistas de Metal. Ainda assim, eu adoraria fazer mais alguns trabalhos de arte como o que fiz para o ReVamp! E o metal é uma cena musical em que, como designer, eu tenho liberdade para agir como desejo. Nessas horas, aquele meu lado negro surge. 😉
11. Com quais outras bandas que você já trabalhou e de que trabalho específico você mais se orgulha do resultado?
Stark: Já trabalhei, sim. Mas, a maioria eram artistas holandeses de fama local. Uma vez, eu criei a capa de um álbum mostrando a banda sentada em um foguete feito de ferro-velho e máquinas de lavar que decolava em um campo com uma ovelha. Esse trabalho foi algo bem diferente de uma mulher com um olhar maligno segurando em sua mão um coração recém arrancado e que ainda sangrava, não é mesmo?
12. Você é o tipo de pessoa que viaja bastante. Qual a melhor lembrança de um país desconhecido e que país você planeja visitar um dia?
Stark: O Brazil, é claro! Será que alguém aí tem um sofá em que eu possa dormir? 😉 Parece que eu tenho alguns fãs por lá! (Risos) Na minha opinião, as melhores viagens são aquelas que ocorrem fora da sua zona de conforto. Para mim, o Japão, a China e a Islândia são parte desse grupo de lugares. Você vai encontrar um novo mundo fora daqui e, de certa forma, também encontrará uma nova versão de você mesmo, porque você acaba em situações que você nunca imaginaria que fosse estar. Uma das viagens mais memoráveis foi a que fiz ao Japão. Eu viajei por lá durante um mês com um amigo. Nós viajamos por todo o país planejando as coisas a cada dia que passava. Foi a aminha primeira experiência na Ásia. O fato de você não conseguir ler os símbolos, não conseguir entender as pessoas ou não saber que tipo de comida você acabou de pedir faz disso tudo algo surreal. O contato com outras pessoas chega a outro nível pelo fato de você não poder bater um papo nessas horas, o que torna tudo mais direto em todos os aspectos.
13. Para encerrar, qual é a sua música favorita dentre todas na carreira da Floor Jansen?
Stark: A “Kill me with Silence”, do disco “ReVamp”, é uma música que chamou a minha atenção e que ficou na minha cabeça por algum tempo. Eu amo o início instrumental e o fato de eu ser apaixonado pela voz da Floor quando ela canta de forma suave. A voz dela é uma das melhores aqui, nos Países Baixos. Tenho certeza disso. O alcance da voz dela de primeira linha! Eu espero muito que nós nos encontremos por aí novamente!

We had the opportunity to interview Richard Stark, the man behind the artworks used in ReVamp’s albuns (ReVamp, in 2010, and Wild Card, in 2013) and the promo album art for the “Wild Card” album. In the following part, there is some trivia about Richard’s work not only with ReVamp, but as a photographer and graphic designer.
1. Let’s start this interview with this question: What are your major influences on design in the entertainment business (music, cinema, television, literature, etc.) and how did they help you improve your art?
Stark: Basically everything that already exists is an influence. As a designer I keep trying mixing these things up to get something new out of it. Something I’ve always loved is the artwork photography of the Dutch photographer Anton Corbijn. Some of the greatest album covers of U2 and Depeche Mode are his work.
2. When you work with music-related art, how do you link illustration, photography, and typography and incorporate these elements into your art?
Stark: Well, it depends on the Music and what message you want to tell. The main thing is that the feeling of the artwork has to be the same as the music it has to visualize. So that also let’s you decide, as a designer, what media you’re going to use in order to make that message clear in the most effective way.
3. Among your works (photographies and artworks, for example), which one of them is the most important to you?
Stark: I started my own company Stark Artworks in graphic design and photography in september 2013. Since then my favorite work is a photograph of the mayor of Maastricht, drinking his tea in the early morning and reading the paper at his huge office room. A simpel scene with something epic going on. This photo-shoot was realized in just a couple of minutes. It became a key-image for Stark Artworks.
Both ReVamp albums were definitely two of my favorite projects at Studio NI I worked there for seven years. Especially the second album Wild Card. They let me go all the way. It was definitely a fun ride!
But as a photographer and designer I always keep looking forward. My best work is still in front of me!
4. How was the process of creating the art for ReVamp’s albums? What has been the greatest challenges you have faced to create these arts?
Stark: Well, the cover artwork looked very different at first. An album cover was finished before the photoshoot took place. An image that was more sereen and abandoned, without even Floor or the band on it. That wasn’t catchy enough, and we realized that the fans would love to have „their Floor” on that cover. We made up a complete new concept during the photo-shoot for the promo-material.
The old image can still be seen in the middle of the booklet though. The empty room with the heart on the scale. It was originally made for the cover.
5. When you were creating the art for the “Wild Card” album, what kind of material did you have available? Was there a main idea? Did they present you some of the songs so you could get some inspiration or did they let you work on your own ideas?
Stark: During the artwork process I haven’t heard the music at all. Floor described it during our photo-shoot. I had it all in mind very quickly. The bleeding heart was the hardest part though. It was not that easy to get or make one. I called up several slaughter houses for a pig heart. Because they seem to look very similar to human hearts. But it was in some way a big deal for them to give one away and there wasn’t that much time left because of the fact we had to switch the cover concept. So eventually I found some stock footage of human hearts and pasted parts of them together to create a new heart that seem to be torn open a bit. For the bleeding parts I just used cherry and strawberry jam I had left in the fridge! You can guess that this was fun.
6 – About the promo album art of Floor for “Wild Card”: did you have artistic freedom when suggesting poses? Or were they made by Floor herself?
Stark: As I remember we spend a day on the fotoshoot for the album and promo pictures. Including various outfits. Floor is a pro, so she improvised her poses mostly all the way. So for me as a photographer that was amazing. What I love is that the most spontaneous picture went up on the disc itself. The finger.(I Hope it wasn’t meant personally towards me)
7. Have you ever had a conflict of ideas with any band you worked with? If so, did it happen because of a difference in interpreting a concept?
Stark: I haven’t done that much album artwork over the years. But there weren’t any problems during those times. I think, i’m able to catch the essence of someone’s idea quite quickly. I think that’s also crucial for this job. It’s all about deadlines. So I better don’t waste anybody’s time!
8. How was your first contact with Floor? In which aspect do you think her work stands out?
Stark: The first time I met Floor was in a hallway when I arrived at work. She was talking to my college and I thought she was a friend. I said „Goodmorning” and walked just past her. Later on I heard who she was and I realized that I have seen her on TV with After Forever before. I guess it was very early that day. (laughing)
As you know her overall appeal is very energetic and amazingly strong as a singer. But I love the moments when she’s just the natural Floor and without heels. Maybe this is only because, in those moments, she’s not taller than me! (laughing)
9. Since design and photography are your greatest passions, we have a question about it: what were the greatest obstacles you had to overcome in the beginning of your career?
Stark: I guess first of all; learning all the computer programs that help to convert your idea’s and visions into digital art. It has to become a tool that’s has to be as normal as your tooth brush. But it takes time, years and most of all experience. And experience brings confidence. I have to be confident. Because how can I create or visualize someone else’s image if i’m not sure about my own? I guess.
10. By taking a look at your website, it is clear that you don’t work exclusively with the music business. Do you have any kind of project you’d like to work on?
Stark: I love the music projects but they come in less then graphic designs or various other photo-shoots. On regularly basis I do some retouch work for Music photographers and Metal Magazines though. I would love to do more album artwork like I did for Revamp! And Metal music is a scene where I can go crazy as a designer. It’s that dark side deep inside of me that comes out at these moments. 😉
11. Have you worked with other bands? If so, is there any project you are proud of?
Stark: Yes I have, but mostly local Dutch music. I once created an album cover showing a band taking off on a rocket made of junk and washing-machines in a field with sheep. That’s quite different than a evil looking woman holding a fresh torn-out bleeding heart in her hand, right?
12. You’re the kind of person who travels a lot. What is the greatest memory you have from travelling to a country you’ve never been to before? Is there any country you’d like to visit someday?
Stark: Brasil someday of course! Does somebody have a spare couch left? 😉 Seems like I have fans myself down there! (laughing) In my opinion the best travels are those out of your comfort zone. Japan, China and Iceland are for me some of those places. You’ll find a new world out there and, in a way, also a new version of yourself. Because you end up in situations you could never think of in the first place. One of the most memorable trips was Japan. I went there for a month with a friend. We travelled through the whole country planning it day by day. It was my first Asian experience. The fact that you can’t read signs, can’t understand people or not knowing what food you just ordered makes it a kind of surreal. The contact with people is on another level because of the fact that you can’t chit-chat at those moments what makes it very direct in all kinds of ways.
13. Just to finish: which song is your favorite from Floor Jansen’s career?
Stark: “Kill me with Silence” of the ReVamp debut Album is a song that caught my attention and didn’t let me go for a while. I love the instrumental beginning. And the fact that I’m a sucker for Floor’s voice when she’s singing in a gentle way. Her singing voice is one of the best here in the Netherlands, i’m sure of that. The variousity of her voice is world class! I surely hope we’ll run into each other some day!

For who? Singers; with or without experience in singing. My goal is to inspire and to make you look into your ‘vocal mirror’ and check yourself where you are and where you want to go to. What will we do?: In this masterclass I will tell you a lot about vocal techniques, from the basics to more detailed and advanced information.
Our goal: a technical check-up. What do you know and what do you use? This will be different for everyone. We will do exercises together and try out different singing styles and sounds. And we will look into song interpretation.
How can you make a song come alive? Tell the story and convince your listeners about the emotion behind it. I will sing examples but will also ask some singers from the group to sing. Everyone should have one song with him or her to sing in case you get chosen to show the group what you can do and what you want to learn. The amount of singers who can sing individual will depend on the size of group. This masterclass is there to inspire you to explore your sound, better your technique and to feel the music even more than before. You should pick my brain as much as you can! In 2,5 hours there is a lot you can learn but without studying nothing happens. To remember what it is we did I film the session and offer you the video afterwards for 50 sek. The masterclass will be in English!

1. Antes de tudo: O que as músicas Sweet Curse e Distorted Lullabies representam pra você? Existe algum tipo de relação entre as duas? E como você se sentiu tocando novamente I Lost Myself?
Ruben Wijga: Ambas as músicas são baladas tocadas no piano. Mas, para mim, essa é a única ligação entre estas duas músicas. Antes de compormos “Distorted Lullabies”, já tínhamos a ideia de uma balada tocada no piano que tivesse uma espécie de “mudança brusca”. A “mudança brusca” acabou se tornando uma balada tocada no piano que, levemente, tornava-se uma música pesada e intensa.
Tocar “I Lost Myself” ao vivo é sempre algo especial. É a única música do ReVamp em que os outros membros não participam. Então, há apenas os vocais e o piano. Toda vez que tocamos essa música, surge uma atmosfera única no palco, assim como entre o pessoal da plateia.
2. Wild Card é um album concentual. Se comparado ao primeiro album, possui um peso bem maior. Como você ve o amadurecimento e a evolução do ReVamp, principalmente na sua participação nas mudanças tão visíveis em cada uma das músicas?
Ruben Wijga: Todos nós queríamos que o segundo álbum fosse mais pesado do que primeiro. Antes de começarmos a compor, nóz fizemos um painel semântico com as músicas que gostávamos. Ao ouvir as músicas do painel, eu percebi que tinha de criar uma sonoridade “própria” para este álbum no que dizia respeito aos arranjos de teclado a fim de torná-lo único e interessante. Já que eu gosto muito de música eletrônica, decidi utilizar esse tipo de som e arranjos de sintetizador no “Wild Card”.
3. Anos atrás, como foi o processo de integração ao ReVamp? Algo profissional, ou você já conhecia a Floor?
Ruben Wijga: Eu não conhecia a Floor ou o pessoal da banda pessoalmente quanto entrei para o ReVamp, com a exceção do Jord. Eu o conheço desde o colegial. Nós dirigíamos juntos para os testes e, no caso, ambos conseguimos entrar.
4. Quando você não está trabalhando com o ReVamp, quais são os tipos de projetos que você se dedica?
Ruben Wijga: Atualmente, trabalho com Joost van den Broek com uma certa frequência. Ele é produtor de diversas bandas e projetos bacanas e, geralmente, não tem tempo de fazer tudo por conta própria. O meu trabalho é escrever as partituras musicais para os músicos que estão gravando baseado na préprodução do Joost.
No ano passado, eu me juntei ao Christmas Metal Symphony. Neste ano, eu também farei algumas coisas nos bastidores, como a organização da orquestra.
5. Além do teclado e violino, que outro tipo de instrumento você toca, ou agrade, ou tenha vontade de aprender?
Ruben Wijga: Eu sei fazer algumas coisas simples no violão. 🙂 Antigamente, eu tocava baixo em alguns projetos. Até cheguei a tentar tocar baixo sem trastes por algum tempo.
Eu gostaria de aprender a tocar gaita cromática, assim como Stevie Wondero e Toots Thielemans. Eu adoro o som daquele instrumento. Eu também gostaria de aprender a tocar triângulo, mas acho que é aí já é demais pra mim. 😉
6. Poderia nos contar um pouco sobre sua rotina em turnê? Sabe-se que é difícil manter uma vida digamos que saudável quando se está na estrada. O que você faz para se cuidar, especialmente durante mudanças drásticas de tempo de um país para o outro?
Ruben Wijga: Eu como e bebo até me satisfazer, de forma moderada. Procuro me exercitar sempre que posso, durmo bem e procuro relaxar sempre que preciso. Então, não é nada muito especial, mas algo bem simples e dinâmico.
7. De repente, você começou a usar esse bigode peculiar e é visível a dedicação que você tem por ele. Quais são seus cuidados? hahaha’
Ruben Wijga: Eu o penteio algumas vezes ao dia (com um pente que ganhei de presente de certos fãs incríveis. Obrigado! haha) e passo um pouco de cera modeladora para preservar a forma.
8. Sobre os seus desenhos (que são lindos): Você os vê como uma paixão também ou apenas hobby?
Ruben Wijga: Obrigado! Eu comecei a desenhar há pouco tempo, então, por enquanto, eu os vejo apenas como um hobby ainda que eu seja apaixonado por eles. Eu adoraria passar mais tempo praticando a fim de melhorar, mas o dia só tem 24 horas…
9. Ainda sobre os seus desenhos: Já pensou na possibilidade de trabalhar na artwork do terceiro álbum do ReVamp?
Ruben Wijga: Na verdade, não. Há muitas pessoas que podem fazer artworks fantásticas e eu não sou uma delas. Eu gosto de desenhar, mas produzir uma artwork é algo completamente diferente. Eu acho que, por enquanto, vou continuar com o lápis (preto ou cinza) e o papel. 🙂
10. Qual é a sua melhor memória? Algo divertido ou até mesmo estranho sobre sua primeira vinda ao Brasil.
Ruben Wijga: As turnês norte-americana e sul-americana foram fantásticas! Foi a minha primeira vez fora da Europa, então só isso já foi algo especial. Eu adorei ver as Cataratas do Niágara, o Cristo Redentor e a cidade maia de Chichén Itzá.

1. Before anything: What do the songs “Sweet Curse” and “Distorted Lullabies” represent to you? Are they related somehow? How did you feel playing “I Lost Myself” again?
Ruben Wijga: They’re both piano ballads of course, but for me that’s the only connection between these two songs. Before we wrote Distorted Lullabies we already had the idea of a piano ballad with a twist somehow. The twist turned out to be a piano ballad that smoothly develops into a heavy and massive song.
Playing I Lost Myself live is always special. It’s the only ReVamp song where the other guys don’t play. So only vocals and piano. Every time we play this song there’s an unique atmosphere on stage as well as in the audience.
2. WildCard is a concept album. When compared to the first album, we notice it is a lot heavier. How do you see ReVamp’s coming of age and evolution, specially when it comes to your musical contribution in the change of style we can clearly notice in each of the songs?
Ruben Wijga: Everyone of us wanted the second album to be heavier than the first album. Before we started the songwriting process we made a mood board with songs we liked. Listening to this mood board I realized I had to create an ‘own’ sound for this album concerning the keyboard parts to make it an interesting and unique album . Since I like electronic music a lot, I decided to use that kind of sounds and synth parts for the Wild Card album.
For the orchestration part I didn’t want to make it too stereotype. I Like contemporary classical music a lot, and thought the tension, almost craziness, and atmosphere would suit some songs we wrote as well. For me, this was the perfect opportunity to make some interesting orchestra arrangements! Luckily the other guys and girl liked it as well 🙂
3. How what the process of joining members for ReVamp years ago? Was it something strictly professional or did you already know Floor?
Ruben Wijga: I didn’t know Floor and the guys personally when I joined ReVamp, except for Jord. I know him since high school. We drove together to the auditions, and both got the job.
4 . On which projects do you focus when you’re not working with ReVamp?
Ruben Wijga: I regularly work for Joost van den Broek these days. He produces a lot of cool bands and projects, and hasn’t always the time to do everything himself. My job is to make sheet music for the recording artists based on his preproduction.
Last year I joined the Christmas Metal Symphony. For this year I will also do some things behind the scenes, like the organization of the orchestra.
5. Besides playing violing and keyboard, is there any other instrument you play, enjoy or would like to learn how to play?
Ruben Wijga: I can do some basic stuff on an acoustic guitar 🙂 I played bass guitar for some projects in the past. I even had a fretless bass for a while.
I would like to learn to play a chromatic harmonica, like Stevie Wonder and Toots Thielemans. I love the sound of that instrument. I also would love to learn to play the triangle, but I think that’s far out of my league 😉
6. Could you tell us a bit more about your tour routine? It’s known that it’s hard to keep healty when you’re on the road. What do you do to take care of your health specially during a sudden change in the weather when you’re going from one country to another?
Ruben Wijga: Eat and drink decently and enough. Try to exercise when possible. Get enough sleep. And try to relax when possible. So nothing special, pretty straight forward.
7. All from sudden, you started using this peculiar moustache and it’s noticeable how caring you are about it. How do you take care of it? hahaha’
Ruben Wijga: I comb it a couple of times a day (with a comb I got as a present from some awesome fans, thanks!), and I put some wax / pomade in it to preserve the shape.
8. About your drawings and paintings (which are beautiful, by the way): do you seem them as a passion or are they just a hobby?
Ruben Wijga: Thanks! I just started to draw, so for now I see it just as a hobby, although I am very passionate about it. I would love to spend more time into it to get better. But there are only 24 hours in a day…
9. Still about your drawings and paintings: have you ever thought about the possibility of working on the artwork for the third ReVamp’s album?
Ruben Wijga: No, not at all. There are enough people who can make great artwork. And I’m not one of them. I like to draw, making artwork is a completely different thing. I think I will stick with graphite (black, grey) and paper for now 🙂
10. Do you have any memory you consider the best? Could it be anything funny, weird or related to the first time you’ve been to Brasil?
Ruben Wijga: The whole North and South America tour was a blast! It was my first time out of Europa, so that felt already special. I loved seeing the Niagara Falls, Christ the redeemer and the Chichen Itza Mayan temple city.

Ingeborg Steenhorst – Jewellery, Accessory & Costume Designer
Hello,
Have you ever thought about who designs and produces Floor’s outfits? No? What if we tell you that this person not only designs the outifts for our beloved Floor but also for most of the greatest female metal singers?
That’s right! Since 2007, Ingeborg Steenhorst , a Dutch designer, procudes the complete outfit (accesories, costumes, jewelry, etc.) for artists like Floor Jansen, Simone Simons, Cristina Sccabia e Dianne Van Giersbergen, among other artists and bands. But, did you think that’s all she can do? No way! In her own studio, Ingeborg also produces female clothing, headdresses and jewelry for all sorts of styles. Among her customers, there are actresses, great dutch female politicians and celebrities like Marijke Helwegen.
Amazing, isn’t it? Then you should take a seat because there’s more amazing stuff! This year, our dear Ingeborg is promoting the FIRST edition of the FEMALE METAL EVENT, in Eindhoven, Netherlands. The event’s target audience is the female one and will present a line up which includes concerts, fashion exhibitions, fashion shows and lot more for the metal ladies. The event’s goal is to highlight the female music scene and everything related to it. Besides that, some parts of the event (like the fashion show, for example) will be filmed and posted on youtube so you can see it! Full footage! 😉

Depois da turnê no Brasil, tivemos a oportunidade de entrevistar o Matthias – o homem por trás da incrível bateria do Revamp!
2. Você realmente gosta da sua barba. Quais os seus cuidados?
Matthias: Escovando duas vezes no dia, ocasionalmente usando cera de bigode e sussurrando palavras de encorajamento para que ela cresça e seja uma barba feliz.
3. Bateria como sua paixão, quais foram suas maiores dificuldades?
Matthias: Não passar fome, haha. É um negócio complicado, e acho que pra mim a parte mais complicada é conseguir empregos fora da cena que eu costumo trabalhar (metal). As pessoas supõem que se você é conhecido por um gênero musical, essa é a única coisa que você faz. Mas já que eu amo a diversidade, eu tento arrumar shows tocando outras músicas também, e isso pode ser bem difícil.
4. Quais foram suas maiores referências e influências?
Matthias: Esta é uma pergunta difícil. Como baterista, provavelmente são caras como Stanton Moore, Steve Jordan, Jojo Mayer ou Benny Greb. Mas, é claro, eu também sou muito influenciado pelos meus professores do conservatório de Rotterdam, Hans Eijkenaar e Juan van Emmerloot. E eu também diria que as pessoas com quem eu toco também me influenciam. Então eu tenho várias influências, não só uma.
5. Como você se uniu a banda? Já conhecia os caras antes, ou foi algo estritamente profissional?
Matthias: Eu tive contato com a Floor através de um amigo em comum, Stef Broks (baterista da banda holandesa Textures) e ela me perguntou se eu queria fazer uma audição para a nova banda dela. Eu não poderia fazer a audição porque eu estava em turnê com Dark Fortess na época, então eu gravei um vídeo tocando as 3 músicas da audição (Head up High, Here’s my Hell e Kill Me with Silence) antes de sair em turnê. Aparentemente o que eu fiz foi bom, por que eu estou aqui, haha.
Além da audição por vídeo, eu encontrei a Floor no primeiro show da turnê com Dark Fortress, então nós pudemos conversar e ver se a gente se dava bem no nível pessoal também. Na verdade, eu nunca tinha visto o resto da banda até o primeiro ensaio e sessão de fotos, o que é meio bizarro, haha. Mas eu confiei na Floor e em suas decisões a respeito dos outros membros da banda, e deu tudo certo, por sorte todo mundo se deu bem com todo mundo… Bem, exceto pelo Ruben obviamente, já que ele toca teclado. Ninguém gosta de tecladistas … 😉
6. O que você sente durante um show, ao ver os fãs gritando, cantando, se entregando totalmente ao show?
Matthias: Escutar o quão animado o public está é incrível! Às vezes, como no Rio de Janeiro, é até assustador, porque não conseguia mais nem ouvir o que a gente estava tocando, hahaha.
Mas para ser honesto, às vezes eu não curto o show mesmo quando o público é bom, simplesmente porque eu estou tendo um dia ruim e toco mal pra cacete. Eu sou meu pior crítico, e às vezes isso acaba com a diversão. Mas bem, c’est la vie, creio eu…
7. Fora do ReVamp, quais são seus trabalhos/projetos?
Matthias: Eu toco em uma banda alemã de Black Metal chamada Dark Fortress desde 2001 bem antes do ReVamp. Nós vamos lançar nosso novo album “Venereal Dawn” dia 1º de setembro, então fiquem de olho.
Além disso, eu trabalho como técnico de bateria para outras bandas, como Rival Sons, Triptykon e também Sabaton ainda esse ano.
Eu tenho alguns planos para novos projetos e bandas, mas ainda é muito cedo para falar sobre isso.
8. Sabemos que a criação do Wild Card teve grande participação dos integrantes, representando de fato a união de todos vocês. Qual música é mais importante pra você?
Matthias: Poderia ser Limbic System ou Neurasthenia. Eu amo a energia e a atmosfera de ambas as canções, e o que Devin Townsend fez em Neurasthenia é simplesmente brilhante.
9. Como você vê essa “necessidade” de nós fãs de estarmos perto de nossos ídolos (fotografias, autógrafos, contato em si), que vai além de ir apenas em um show?
Matthias: Eu não tenho problema com isso, eu considero isso como parte do meu trabalho, por assim dizer. Eu particularmente não entendo o que há de tão especial em meu autógrafo, haha, mas é algo que é claramente importante para eles, então eu não me importo de autografar coisas ou tirar fotos. As vezes quando nós temos que correr e não temos tempo de interagir, a gente não consegue fazê-lo e eu espero que os fãs entendam. Nós somos apenas pessoas no fim das contas… 😉
10. Sobre a turnê do Sul, algo divertido ou até mesmo estranho ocorrido que poderia nos contar?
Matthias: Eu receio ser a pessoa errada para responder essa questão. Eu sou um dos mais chatos na banda, hahaha. Isso é algo que você deveria perguntar para os “Três Mosqueteiros”, também conhecidos como Arjan, Henk e Sam, nosso cara do som na turnê do Sul… 😉
11. Qual a maior loucura já feita durante um show?
Matthias: Durante um show? Nada, eu toco a música. Não existe tempo para palhaçada, isso é sobre entregar uma ótima performance e tocar o melhor que você puder. Pelo menos é como eu vejo isso.
12. Qual a melhor memória sobre sua passagem pelo Brasil?
Matthias: Bem, o show no Rio, porque foi o primeiro show do ReVamp na América do Sul e eu não sabia o que esperar, e me surpreendi agradavelmente.
A recepção calorosa das pessoas que conheci em todos os lugares, isso também foi muito legal.
E a comida, haha. Eu adoro comer boa comida, então beber uma caipirinha enquanto comia uma boa comida brasileira foi uma experiência muito boa também… 😉
Matthias Landes – Dark Fortress
After Revamp Brazilian Tour, we’ve had the opportunity of interviewing Matthias – the man behind Revamp’s kickass drums!
1. Who is Matthias Landes behind the drums?
Matthias: Hopefully the same guy as when not behind the drums, haha. I just love playing drums, that’s what I do, and that’s who I am. So I don’t think I change much, or have to act a certain “role” as a drummer.
2. How do you take care of your beard?
Matthias: Brushing twice a day, occasionally using mustache wax, and whispering words of encouragement for it to grow and be a happy beard.
3. How is the most difficulty of being a professional drummer?
Matthias: Not starving, haha. It’s a tricky business, and I think for me the trickiest part is to get jobs outside of the scene I usually work in (metal). People assume that if they know you for one genre of music, that’s the only thing you do. But since I love diversity, I try to get gigs playing other music as well, and that can be quite difficult.
4. Who is you biggest influence in music?
Matthias: That’s a tough question. As far as drummers go, right now it’s probably guys like Stanton Moore, Steve Jordan, Jojo Mayer or Benny Greb. But of course I also got very influenced by my teachers at the conservatory in Rotterdam, Hans Eijkenaar and Juan van Emmerloot. And the people I play with influence me as well I’d say, so really there are a lot of influences, not just one.
5. How have you joined the band? Had you met the guys before, or was it strictly professional?
Matthias: I got in contact with Floor through a mutual friend, Stef Broks (drummer of the Dutch band Textures), and she asked me if I wanted to do an audition for her new band. I couldn’t make the audition, because I was on tour with Dark Fortress at that time, so I recorded a video playing the three audition songs (Head Up High, Here’s My Hell and Kill Me With Silence) before I went on tour. Apparently what I did was good, cause here I am, haha.
Additionally to the video audition I met Floor at the first show of my tour with Dark Fortress, so we could talk and see if we’d get along on a personal level as well. I had never met the rest of the band before the first rehearsal and photoshoot actually, which was a bit weird, haha.
But I trusted Floor in her decisions concerning the other band members, and it turned out just fine, luckily everybody got along with everyone… Well, except for Ruben obviously, cause he plays keyboards. Nobody likes keyboarders… 😉
6. How do you feel during the show? Hearing the fans screaming and singing all the songs?
Matthias: Hearing how enthusiastic the crowd is is amazing of course. Sometimes, like in Rio de Janeiro, it’s even scary, cause I couldn’t hear what we were playing anymore, hahaha.
But to be honest, sometimes I don’t enjoy a show even when the crowd is good, just because I’m having a bad day and play like crap. I’m my own worst critic, and sometimes that kills the fun. But well, c’est la vie I guess…
7. Besides ReVamp, which are your works/projects?
Matthias: I play in a German black metal band called Dark Fortress, since 2001 already, long before ReVamp. We are going to release our new album “Venereal Dawn” on 1st of September, so check it out.
Other than that I work as a drumtech for other bands, like Rival Sons, Triptykon, and also Sabaton later this year.
I have some plans for new projects and bands right now, but it’s too early to talk about that.
8. We know that the creation of Wild Card has had a great participation of the band members, which has shown the union of all of you. Which of the songs is your favourite?
Matthias: That would be either Limbic System or Neurasthenia. I love the energy and atmosphere of both songs, and what Devin Townsend did on Neurasthenia is just brilliant.
9. How do you see this “need” some of us fans have to stay to near our idols (taking pics, getting autographs, having contact in general), which goes beyond attending a concert?
Matthias: I don’t have a problem with it, I consider it part of my job, so to speak. I personally don’t understand what’s so special about my autograph, haha, but it is something that is clearly important to them, so I don’t mind signing stuff or taking pics. Sometimes when we have to hurry and there is no time to hang out we can’t do it, and I hope that the fans understand that as well. We’re only people as well after all… 😉
10. About south american tour: was there anything fun or even strange that happened? Could you tell us?
Matthias: I’m afraid I’m the wrong person to answer that question, I’m the most boring one in the band, haha. That’s something you should ask the “Three Musketeers”, a.k.a. Arjan, Henk and Sam, our soundguy in South America… 😉
11. What’s the craziest thing you’ve done during a concert?
Matthias: During a show? Nothing, I play music. There is no time for bullshit, it’s about delivering a great performance, and playing the best you can. At least that’s how I see it.
12. What’s your best memory regarding your stay in Brasil?
Matthias: Well, the show in Rio, because it was the first show for ReVamp in South America, and I didn’t know what to expect, and was very pleasantly surprised.
The warm welcome of the people I met everywhere, that was very cool as well.
And the food, haha. I love eating good food, so sipping on a caipirinha while eating some nice brazilian food was a very nice experience as well… 😉

Before anything, we would like to thank you all for the amazing shows. We waited for so long, and finally it happened. 🙂
Each time that each one of us spent during the shows was a blast, and if we were to describe the point of view of each fan, a video would actually be eternal :). We, ReVamp ARMY talked about and we came to the same conclusion, about the shows.
