Ouvimos o Dark Horse White Horse!

Rostos bem conhecidos por cada um de nós: Marcela Bovio, (ex-Stream of Passion, MaYaN, Ayreon), Ruben Wijga (ex-ReVamp, BlackBriar) e Jord Otto (ex-ReVamp, ex-VUUR, My Propane). Completando o time, temos a participação na bateria com o Ariën van Weesenbeek (Epica, MaYaN, ex-God Dethroned), e o baixista Siebe Sol Sijpkens (Phantom Elite, Destiny Potato, Sordid Pink).

Após anos trabalhando na cena do metal holandês, o trio encontrou a oportunidade de combinar suas habilidades e influências para criar uma mistura única do progressivo, eletrônico e, claro, o tão querido sinfônico; nascendo assim, o DARK HORSE WHITE HORSE.

O Head up High teve a oportunidade de ouvir o EP que será lançado no dia 16 de abril deste ano e aqui estão nossas impressões:

Judgement Day (04:00): Essa música, que abre o EP, parece algo de outro mundo. Guitarras e baixos pesados mostrando a todos a que veio. Se você é um entusiasta de metal progressivo e outras vertentes menos “fáceis de se ouvir”, você vai se amarrar instantaneamente nessa música. Os versos pré-refrão trabalham num tempo quebrado, te dando a sensação que ao juntar com as palavras que estão sendo cantadas, passam a impressão de desespero e medo, revolta e fúria. É curioso e certamente belo começar o EP cantando a plenos pulmões que é o fim do mundo. O refrão gruda na sua mente de uma forma positiva, com Marcela soltando sua voz incrível e reconhecível os versos “this is the end of the world, the end, the end!” – e que sensação mais propícia de se ter durante essa pandemia, não é?

Os backing vocals e as múltiplas camadas vocais também são um fator a ser mencionado e aplaudido. Que excelente trabalho de arranjo com essas linhas vocais secundárias, a imersão que elas causam é o que nós, aficionados pela música, buscamos sempre que apertamos play em qualquer coisa. A música instantaneamente te leva a bater cabeça, o peso e a progressão, a relação entre criar tensão e aliviar nos momentos certos gera uma sensação de satisfação enorme. Ao vivo ela seria uma abertura de show que já te deixaria sem voz logo na primeira música.

Black Hole (04:13): Foi a música mais “tranquila” do EP. Mas dizer isso é longe de dizer que a música é calma, pois ela é frenética e cumpre bem a sua missão no álbum. Os riffs dessa música são excepcionais, como o de todas as músicas. O trabalho de Jord Otto nas guitarras é incrível em toda a sua carreira, mas eu tenho motivos a acreditar que especificamente no DHWH ele fez um de seus melhores trabalhos, se não o melhor.

O uso de sintetizadores de Ruben Wijga para conectar os versos é feito de forma bem pensada e adiciona uma sensação inesperada para música – raramente vemos o timbre do sintetizador sendo usado nas músicas de forma tão presente para conectar os versos e é feito de forma bem pensada e adiciona uma sensação inesperada para a música. Os vocais estão agressivos e expressivos, te levam o sentimento necessário para te guiar pelo peso da música.

The Spider (04:15): Essa música é de uma energia constante e intensa. A sucessão dos solos de guitarra seguido do solo de sintetizador é o metal na sua forma mais interessante. É possível escutar o espaço criativo que cada um dos músicos teve para a criação das músicas, sem ser necessário dosar-se para se encaixar em determinado gênero ou expectativa. começa soando brutal e impossível de tirar da mente. Ela possui riffs específicos que não saem da cabeça mesmo depois de finda a música. A suavidade da voz da Marcela no começo em contraste com o peso arrepia e conforme o tom vai aumentando gradativamente você vai se sentindo cada vez mais embebido na canção. O refrão soa leve e cativante, mas de uma maneira diferente das anteriores, ainda mais madura- se é que é possível. O solo de guitarra é um show a parte na música, precisa ser destacado como um ponto altíssimo, bem como o solo de synths.

Get Out (04:11): Ela provoca uma sensação de desconforto que me soa proposital. A calma com que os versos começam e se tornam um clamor de expurgo me fizeram arrepiar também. Até mesmo os vocais suaves no começo soam pesados. Os versos do refrão, “You’re not welcome here” sao cantados de forma forte e tocante. O violino ao fundo nas poucas partes calmas soa como a calma antes da tempestade. Mais um solo de guitarra para nos fazer tremer. E uma composição de tirar o fôlego, certamente.

A atmosfera das estrofes dessa faixa é incrível, a voz de Marcela com uma interpretação e sentimento incrível a cada verso e o sintetizador ajudando a intensificar os sentimentos da voz se conversam de uma forma excelente, e logo que você está se acostumando com essa sensação, o refrão vem forte e de forma intensa. A dinâmica da música é estupenda, a música nunca te deixa ficar distraído porque sempre há uma mudança interessante, ela te mantém atento para todos os mínimos detalhes que estão acontecendo (e mudando constantemente) conforme os versos passam.

Cursed (05:20): ~~[nossa favorita, sem dúvidas]~~ O backing vocal em impostação lírica que acontece conforme a música transmite a ideia realmente do nome da música: uma maldição lançada. O contraste da voz de Marcela com os riffs é encantador. Mas nada é mais incrível do que a surpresa que Cursed traz para o ouvinte, além dos backing vocals. Uma música extremamente forte, sem limites e instrumentalmente poderosa.

É notória a vontade, especialmente nesta canção, de dizer em alto e bom som o que se precisa, de forma enfática. Marcela pronuncia cada palavra com precisão cirúrgica de intenção e significado. Os vocais altíssimos combinados com os riffs potentes e solos de guitarras incríveis por cima transformam essa música no encerramento perfeito para o EP. Os momentos de rápidos orquestração com o teclado trazem uma atmosfera escura e amedrontadora, só consigo imaginar os cenários típicos de um romance de terror. A sensação da segunda parte da música é de fuga, é simplesmente incrível.

É possível dizer que Dark Horse White Horse são mestres da dinâmica nas músicas. Foram 25 minutos de EP de uma música extremamente pesada, porém nunca pesada ao ponto de se tornar monótono de ouvir. Os vocais de Marcela Bovio estão melhores e mais dinâmicos que nunca, tenho a sensação de que ela deu tudo de si enquanto gravava, isso eu afirmo sem a menor preocupação.
Também podemos reafirmar que esse é um dos melhores trabalhos de Jord Otto e de Ruben Wijga. Para quem já achava o trabalho deles incríveis em suas bandas passadas, se preparem para serem arrebatados por uma série de riffs, solos e técnicas variadas. Não podemos esquecer de mencionar Ariën van Weesenbeek e Siebe Sol pelos seus trabalhos fantásticos na bateira e no baixo, respectivamente.

Esse EP só prova que ao combinar com as pessoas certas para um trabalho criativo sem restrições, o resultado é algo incrível e refrescante. Recomendamos para todos os fãs de metal que estejam procurando novas fontes de arrepios musicais. É uma obra de arte poderosa, e nos deixa ansiosos para vê-la ao vivo um dia – ver e ouvir essas canções ganharem vida em um palco, pelas mãos e garganta de músicos tão habilidosos que conhecemos e amamos.

Só podemos dizer que, no futuro, mais músicas deste projeto são mais do que bem-vindas!

Review: Dark Horse White Horse!

Well-known talents for us: Marcela Bovio, (ex-Stream of Passion, MaYaN, Ayreon), Ruben Wijga (ex-ReVamp, BlackBriar), and Jord Otto (ex-ReVamp, ex-VUUR, My Propane). Completing the gang, we have also in the drums Ariën van Weesenbeek (Epica, MaYaN, ex-God Dethroned), and in the bass Siebe Sol Sijpkens (Phantom Elite, Destiny Potato, Sordid Pink).

After years of working in the Dutch metal scene, the trio has found the opportunity to combine their skills and influences to create a unique mix of progressive, electronic, and also, the so beloved symphonic metal, giving birth to DARK HORSE WHITE HORSE.

We from Head Up High had the opportunity to listen to the EP that will be released on April 16th and here are our impressions:

Judgment Day (4:00): This song opens the EP and it sounds like something from a different world. Heavy guitars and basses show the listeners what they are here for. If you’re a prog metal enthusiastic and others “not-so-easy to listen” branches of metal, you’ll dig this song instantly. The pre-chorus verses happen in an unusual time signature, that connecting it to the words being sung, gives you the impression of desperation, fear, and fury. It is curious and certainly a great way to start the EP singing at the top of your lungs that this is the end of the world. The chorus hooks onto your mind in a positive for, with Marcela showing her amazing and recognizable voice in the verses “This is the end of the world, the end, the end!” – And what a familiar feeling all of us are feeling due to this pandemic, isn’t it?

The backing vocals and the multiple vocal layers are also a factor worth mentioning and praised. What an excellent job was the arrangement of the secondary vocal lines, the immersion they cause is that feeling that we, music affectionate, always look for when we hit “play” in anything. The song leads you to instantly headbang: the heaviness and the progression, the relation between creating and releasing tension in the correct moments creates a delightful feeling of satisfaction. That would be that sort of song that if played live as an intro to the concert, would make you voiceless right in the first song.

Black Hole (04:13): This is the “softest” song in the EP, but that doesn’t mean the song is actually soft – it is incredibly frenetic and plays its role with majesty in this EP. This song’s riffs are exceptional. Jord Otto’s job in the guitars is incredible throughout his musical journey, but I have reasons to believe that what he did specifically in DHWH is one of the best jobs in his entire career, if not the best.

The use of the Synths by Ruben Wijga to connect the verses is done in a well-thought-out way and it adds unexpected elements to the song – rarely we listen to the synth sound being used in metal songs with such skills. The vocals are aggressive and explosive and guide you through the amazing heaviness the song provides.

The Spider (4:15): This song has constant and intense energy. The succession of guitar solos followed by synths solos it’s metal in its most interesting sounds. It is possible to hear the creative flow each musician had to create the songs, not being needed to pigeonhole themselves into a specific sound or genre, to accomplish somebody’s expectative over their sound.

The song starts brutal and it’s hard to get it out of your mind. It has specifics riffs that will replay in your mind after the song is over for quite a while. The smoothness of Marcela’s voice in contrast with the intense instrumental gives you goosebumps as the song progresses.

The chorus sounds light and catchy, but in a different way from the previous songs – it sounds more mature (if possible). The solos in this song are definitely the highlight, both the guitar and the synth solos.

Get out (04:11): It gives me the feeling of uncomfortableness, and it sounds that they did this on purpose. The calm that comes in the first verses culminates in a purge that gave me goosebumps. The verses from the chorus “You’re not welcome here” are sung strongly and movingly. The violin on the back in the few quiet parts sounds like the calm before the storm. It is a breathtaking song indeed.

The dynamics in this song are phenomenal, the song never allows you to get distracted because there’s always something interesting happening – you have to pay attention to everything that’s happening (and constantly changing) as the verses go by.

Cursed (05:20): [Our favorite song, no questions asked] The backing vocal with the operatic vocals transmits what the song title indicates: a curse being thrown. The contrast between Marcela’s voice and the riffs is incredibly charming. It is an incredibly strong song, limitless with a powerful instrumental arrangement to it.

It is notorious that in this song, Marcela wanted the message to be conveyed with clarity. She pronounces every word with surgical precision, meaning every word she sings. The incredibly high-pitched vocals combined with Jord’s already-mentioned riffs transform this song into the perfect end to this EP journey. The quick orchestral moments help the listener to get into a dark and scary atmosphere – I can only imagine the typical horror movie scenarios when I listen to it. The feeling I got from the second part of the song was as if I was running away from something (or myself, maybe?) – It is simply amazing.

It’s possible to say that DHWH are masters in dynamics. It was a 25 minutes EP of extremely heavy music and it never got to the point of being boring to hear. Marcela Bovio’s vocals are better and more dynamic than ever, I have the feeling she gave everything she had during the records.

I can also say that this is one of the best works by Jord Otto and Ruben Wijga. For whomever already liked their previous works in different bands, get ready for an incredible journey with a series of riffs, solos, and the most varied techniques. It’s also worth mentioning Arien Van Weesenbeek and Siebe Sol for their fantastic work on the drums and the bass, respectively.

This EP only proves that when combining the correct people in a creative environment, without any creativity restrictions, the result is always something fresh and amazing. It is a powerful piece of art, and it makes us anxious to see it live someday – see and listen to these songs come to life on a stage, by the hands (and throat) of such skillful musicians we know and love. I recommend this EP to every Metal fan that is looking for new sources of musical goosebumps. We can only say that, in the future, more songs from this project are more than welcome!

Entrevista: Jord Otto

Recentemente Anneke van Giersbergen anunciou sua nova banda, intitulada de VUUR.
O Head up High teve a oportunidade de entrevistar o guitarrista bem conhecido por nós, Jord Otto.

L’Oreal Paris: Because You’re Worth It! 😉

Obrigada, Jord!

1. Além de se juntar às bandas The Blackest Grey e My Propane, no que você trabalhou nos últimos dois anos após o término da turnê do Wild Card?

Jord: Eu não me juntei ao The Blackest Grey nos últimos dois anos. Na verdade, essa foi a primeira banda da qual fiz parte e que ficou um pouco mais séria, porque tínhamos muitos shows do que estávamos acostumados. Mas a formação já existe desde 2006. Nós nunca lançamos um álbum, pois tocávamos por diversão. Agora, estamos tentando ser maduros, beber menos cerveja durante os ensaios e gravar alguma coisa de fato. O que fiz nos últimos anos foi o seguinte: compus algumas coisas para o álbum do My Propane e toquei guitarra como se não houvesse amanhã.

2. Como você foi convidado para fazer parte da VUUR?

Jord: Johan Van Stratum perguntou se teria interesse em tocar na banda nova da Anneke. Bom… dá pra imaginar qual foi a minha resposta!

3. A banda VUUR é formada por músicos excelentes e, de alguma forma, todos vocês já trabalharam juntos antes direta ou indiretamente. Como é a sua relação com os outros membros da banda? Você já tinha trabalhado com algum deles antes?

Jord: Sim! Eu estou tão feliz por poder tocar com cada um dos membros do Vuur. Aliás, isso e ao fato de serem pessoas incríveis cuja qualidade musical é fora do comum. Na verdade, nós não nos conhecíamos muito bem. Certa vez, eu fiz uma pequena turnê do ReVamp com o apoio do Stream of Passion, na Rússia, e, portanto, conheci a Marcela e o Johan. Eu já havia visto os outros membros em shows, mas não os conhecia pessoalmente. De qualquer maneira, logo no primeiro ensaio, eu já me senti em casa imediatamente.

4. Há muitas bandas com vocais femininos atualmente. Qual o propósito do Vuur para que vocês possam se destacar na atual cena do metal?

Jord: Nós temos a Anneke e a Marcela. Mas foda-se o rótulo “vocal feminino”, gente. A Floor também não gostava muito disso e eu concordo com ela. Vocês só precisarão esperar um pouco e ouvir quando lançarmos algum material!

5. Além do VUUR, você também faz parte do My propane e toca com o Henk no The Blackest Gray. Como você vê o seu crescimento enquanto guitarrista?

Jord: Acho que a minha evolução se dá ao fato de que percebo que há muito mais do que o metal em termos musicais. Eu ouço muitos estilos de música diferentes e tento tirar mais inspiração deles. Isso com certeza tem reflexo no que eu componho, embora eu mantenha meu material mais na linha do metal.

6. Como surgiu a ideia do The Blackest Gray e que tipo de inspiração foi necessária para compor tanto a melodia como escrever a letra da música “Escapist”?

Jord: Como eu disse antes, não é bem uma ideia nova. A música “Escapist” é, na verdade, uma das primeiras canções que compusemos juntos. Somente a melhoramos e re-lançamos em nosso novo álbum.

7. O que podemos esperar musicalmente do VUUR e quais são as suas expectativas com relação à banda?

Jord: O álbum será algo novo e lindo, mas sem deixar de ser pesado e até surpreendente às vezes. Eu acho que vocês vão gostar. 😉 Quanto às expectativas futuras… muitos shows e diversão!

8. Por ser um artista famoso, ganhar fãs torna-se inevitável e, por algumas razões, os músicos deixam alguns projetos. Como é estar em um projeto totalmente diferente e ter o suporte dos fãs que você conquistou em projetos antigos?

Jord: É muito bom, obviamente. É difícil ganhar um salário razoável trabalhando com música e eu tenho que continuar trabalhando além dessa área. Então, todo o meu tempo livre acaba sendo investido em compor e tocar. Ganhar reconhecimento é simplesmente maravilhoso. Pode soar clichê, mas, sem os fãs, nada disso é possível. Então, muito obrigado a todos!

9. Basicamente, todas as bandas e projetos da Anneke vêm ao Brasil, o que significa que você virá num futuro não tão distante. Você tem alguma memória especial de quando esteve aqui que gostaria de compartilhar com os fãs brasileiros? E não estamos falando de cuidados com o cabelo. (risos)

Jord: Eu quero muito ir ao Brasil de novo! O público de lá é simplesmente incrível e “chuta muitas bundas”! Isso já é algo absurdamente especial. Mas também quero beber muitas caipirinhas de novo.

10. O L’Oréal Paris tem um novo foco: a barba dos homens! Seu cabelo fica com ciúme por ter de dividir a atenção agora? Hahaha

Jord: Ele fica enroscado na barba às vezes, mas eu prefiro acreditar que é amor e não ciúme!

Interview: Jord Otto

Recently Anneke van Giersbergen announced her new band, entitled of VUUR.
‘Head up High‘ had the opportunity to interview the guitar player very known by us, Jord Otto.

L’Oreal Paris: Because You’re Worth It! 😉

Thank you, Jord!

1. Besides joining ‘The Blackest Grey’ and ‘My Propane’, what have you been doing during the past 2 years after the Wild Card tour ended?

Jord: I didn’t join The Blackest Grey in these 2 years. It’s actually the first band I got in that became a bit more serious as we had a lot of shows compared to what I did before that. But we already exist in this formation from 2006. We just never released an album as it was more of a “hobby” band. Now we’re trying to be mature and drink less beer during practice and actually record some new stuff 😉 What I’ve been doing: Mostly writing for the new My Propane album and just playing a lot of guitar as you can never be good enough! 🙂

2. How were you invited to join VUUR?

Jord: I got asked by Johan van Stratum if I was interested in playing with Anneke’s new band VUUR. And well… you can guess what my response was!

3. Vuur is formed by excellent musicians and, somehow, all of you have directly or indirectly worked together before. How is your relationship with the other band members? And have you ever worked with any of them before that?

Jord: Hell yessss! I’m so glad I get to play music with every single one of the VUUR members. Next to the fact that they are all a bunch of sweet people the quality of musicianship is outstanding. We actually didn’t know each other that well. I once did a little ReVamp tour with Stream of Passion in Russia so I already knew Johan and Marcela. I have seen the others at gigs or on Facebook but didn’t know them in person. But once the first rehearsal kicked off I felt at home immediately.

4. There are many female-fronted bands nowadays. What’s VUUR’s proposal so it can stand out in the current metal scene?

Jord: We got Anneke AND Marcela. :p But hey fuck the “female-fronted” label right? Floor also had a grudge against it and I totally agree on that.

You’ll just have to wait and listen once something gets out! 😉

5. Besides VUUR, you are also part of ‘My Propane’ and play alongside Henk in ‘The Blackest Grey’. How do you see your growth and your evolution as a guitar player?
Jord: Well I think my growth kinda lies in the fact that I am realizing that there’s so much more then my typical goto metal music. I listen to loadddddsss of different styles of music and try to get more inspiration out of that. It definitely reflects in my writing altough I keep things metal of course.

6. How did the idea on The Blackest Grey come up? And what kind of inspiration was necessary to create the melody and lyrics for the song ‘Escapist’?

Jord: Like I said before, it’s not really an idea of the present 🙂 Escapist is actually one of the first songs we wrote together. We just transformed it to fuck and re released it on our new album.

7. What can we musically expect from Vuur and what are your expectations for the future with it?

Jord: The album is gonna be something else, something new, something beautiful yet heavy and bombastic at times. I think you’ll be pleased 😉 Expectations for the future… Loads of gigs, tours and fun!

8. Since you are a known artist, it becomes inevitable for fans to come up, and, for some reason, bands to end or even some musicians to leave some their projects. How does it feel, for you, to continue in a totally different project and have the support from fans that you follow you from your past projects?

Jord: It feels really good, obviously. It’s hard to earn a reasonable income in the music business and I have to keep working besides music. So all of my free time goes into writing music and playing. Getting some recognition and getting all your support just makes up for so much! It’s a bit of a cliché but without fans we can’t do it 😉

9. Basically, all the bands and projects created by Anneke come to Brazil, so you’re probably coming over in a (not so) distant future. Do you remember something special from when you came here that you would like to tell your Brazilian fans? And we’re not talking about hair care (hahaha)

Jord: How I wish to go there again! The crowd over there is just unbelievable and KICKS fucking ass! That was pretty damn special already. But next to that I just really need to drink caipirinhas again… :):):):)

10. Apparently L’Oreal Paris has a new focus: men’s beard. Does your hair feel jealous for sharing its attention now? Hahaha

Jord: It does get stuck in my beard sometimes but I like to believe it’s love, not jealousy.

Como tudo na vida, existe um ciclo. Com a música não poderia ser diferente. Ontem, mais um ciclo se encerrou deixando-nos com dois excelentes álbuns, muitos shows e inúmeras memórias.

As everything in life, there’s a cycle. It couldn’t be different with music. Yesterday, one more cycle came to an end, leaving us with two excellent albums, many shows and uncountable memories.

Estamos tristes em informar que o ReVamp, oficialmente, parou. Após dois ótimos discos, infelizmente não é possível para Floor Jansen permanecer com uma banda, estando junto ao Nightwish. Projetos, talvez, mas uma banda merece 100% de devoção, do qual é impossível realizar estando em duas bandas ao mesmo tempo.

Floor: “Eu estou muito orgulhosa dos dois álbuns que nós fizemos juntos! O ReVamp tem músicos talentosos e ótimos, e eu não gostaria de deixá-los esperando por mim até que eu encontre tempo e paixões necessárias para fazer outro álbum. E eu também não quero dar aos fãs falsas esperanças. O ReVamp viveu uma vida curta, mas muito animada, mas agora é hora de novas bandas e começos de projetos. Eu agradeço à todos os envolvidos pelo amor e dedicação!”

O ReVamp manterá a página no facebook aberta para suas reações por mais um mês. Se você está querendo saber o que nós estamos fazendo e o que foi feito, aqui está uma pequena atualização:
