Como você descreveria o seu tempo com o Nightwish?
Tem sido ótimo, maravilhoso. Quem tem a oportunidade de fazer isso? Sei muito bem da extraordinária oportunidade que me foi dada, mas ao mesmo tempo ele vem muito natural. Todos nós temos o mesmo objetivo e a mesma mentalidade de trabalho. Eu não deveria me debruçar sobre a magnitude de tudo, porque eu vou ficar um pouco sobrecarregada.

Você provavelmente teve que adaptar algumas músicas do Nightwish para sua voz, como você fez isso?

Eu não tive muito tempo para fazer isso. O que provavelmente é uma coisa boa. Não houve tempo para eu testar os vocais. A única coisa que me foi dita foi: sem muitos vocais operísticos. Esse período da banda acabou. Eu nem mesmo cantava as músicas antigas em minha voz operística. Muitas pessoas pensam que a minha interpretação das músicas é uma mistura entre Tarja e Anette, do qual veem como uma coisa positiva. Mas eu acho que eu tenho dado para as músicas um toque pessoal ao longo do tempo. Ghost Love Score é a minha favorita para cantar.

Como os fãs reagem?
De forma muito positiva. No passado, a mudança de cantoras nesta banda tem sido acompanhada de um monte de comentários. Por alguma razão, os fãs realmente gostam de mim como a vocalista. Eles estão felizes com a vibe que eu trago e a interpretação que dou para as canções. Muitas pessoas querem que eu fique.

Você quer ficar?
Eu adoraria. Da maneira como as coisas estão agora, seria possível. O último show do Nightwish é no dia 11 de agosto e o álbum do ReVamp será lançado no dia 23 de agosto. Nightwish terá uma pausa de alguns meses e ReVamp estará em turnê. Ninguém sabe o que vai acontecer depois disso. As decisões serão tomadas no próximo ano, de modo que isso é muito empolgante. Nightwish tem um espaço para ensaios/estúdio em julho, agosto e setembro, então haveráum novo álbum. Mas eu não sei se farei parte disso.

Com o ReVamp você iniciou uma campanha de financiamento público para uma turnê. Você acha que a Nuclear Blast tem a capacidade financeira para tal empreendimento?
Na verdade, isso é o que você pensa. Mas, devido à diminuição nas vendas de CDs, a gravadora tem muito menos dinheiro para gastar. Há dinheiro, mas é para gravação e videoclipes. Mesmo que a Nuclear Blast fizesse uma proposta de turnê, esse dinheiro é recuperável. Isso significa que a banda tem de recuperá-lo através da venda de álbuns. Basicamente isso significa que você mesmo paga para a turnê e que você nunca vê qualquer dinheiro das vendas de discos. Isso não seria um grande problema, mas nós temos que pagar para viver também. Muitos fãs gostaram de estar envolvidos com este projeto e entenderam que não há muitos meios financeiros disponíveis. Se as pessoas parassem de fazer downloads gratuitos, o problema seria resolvido e não haveria necessidade de um projeto de financiamento público.
Eu não sou contra o download, mas você tem que pagar por isso. Custa dinheiro para produzir um álbum. Uma gravação não é um item gratuito. Eu acho que é inacreditável que não há regulamentação para isso. Você vê todo o colapso da indústria lentamente.

O nome do novo álbum do ReVamp é Wild Card, você pode explicar isso?
Eu sempre acho difícil descrever um álbum em uma palavra ou frase. Wild Card significa algo como um fator imprevisto, ardente. Se encaixa no álbum, porque você não sabe o que a próxima música traz. Então, musicalmente é um curinga. Além disso, é o título de uma canção.
Não há tema do álbum. Eu escrevi sobre a minha crise nas três canções de The Anatomy of A Nervous Breakdown, cada uma a partir de uma perspectiva diferente. A Wolf and Dog é sobre outra coisa. O equilíbrio entre o meu lado performer / carreira que vai ‘caçar’ (lobo) e que o cão que quer estar seguro e confortável em casa. Esses dois lados são opostos um do outro em meu mundo.
Musicalmente, o álbum é mais pesado. É mais orientado nos riffs, tem mais variação nos vocais e mais partes com orquestração. A gravação foi escrita com os outros membros da banda, principalmente com o guitarrista Jord Otto e o tecladista Ruben Wijga, eu e Joost van den Broek como guardiões do processo. No primeiro disco eu também escrevi a música, agora eu fiz principalmente as linhas vocais e letras. Há alguns músicos convidados. Marcela Bovio (Stream of Passion) e Daniel de Jongh (Textures) cantam comigo no coro. Devin Townsend canta em Neurasthenia e Mark Jansen (Epica) faz os guturais em Misery’s No Crime. Eu mesma fiz os outros guturais.

Você esteve fora de cena por algum tempo devido a uma síndrome de Burn Out e agora você está na ativa novamente com ambos Nightwish e ReVamp. Assim, podemos concluir que está tudo melhor agora?

Sim, estou. Posso realmente sentir a diferença em relação aos últimos anos. Também sei o porquê eu tive Burn Out e as coisas que faço com o Nightwish não estão relacionadas com nada disso, sequer. Eu sou uma boa cantora e compositora, me coloque no palco e eu me sinto em casa. Mas não me deixe fazer a gestão dos negócios financeiros. Eu posso fazer isso, mas custa muita energia. Essa foi a causa da minha crise. Agora eu sei onde quero colocar a minha energia. Eu tiro uma folga nos fins de semana de vez em quando, tento evitar as coisas que têm uma energia negativa e faço as coisas de forma diferente. Eu nunca vou deixar minha saúde vir em segundo lugar novamente. Você não vai gostar nada quando se tem uma crise. Eu não podia nem cantar por mais de meio ano.

How would you describe your time with Nightwish? 
It’s been great, wonderful. Who gets the opportunity to do this? I am very aware of the remarkable opportunity that I have been given, but at the same time it comes quite natural. All of us have the same goal and the same work mentality. I shouldn’t dwell on the magnitude of everything, because I’ll get a bit overwhelmed.

You probably had to adapt some Nightwish songs to your own voice, how did you do that?
I didn’t get a lot of time to do that. Which is probably a good thing. There wasn’t time for me to experiment with the vocals. The only thing they said to me was: not too much operatic vocals. That period of the band is over. I don’t even sing the old songs in my operatic voice. Many people think my interpretation of the songs is a mix between Tarja and Anette, which they see as a positive thing. But I think I have given the songs a personal touch over time. Ghost Love Score is my favorite to sing.

How do the fans react? 
Very positively. In the past, the changing of singers in this band has been accompanied with a lot of comments. For some reason, fans really like me as the singer. They are happy with the vibe I bring and the interpretation I give to the songs. Many people want me to stay.

Do you want to stay?
I would love to. The way things are now, it would be possible. The last show of Nightwish is on the 11th of August and the album of ReVamp will be released on August 23rd. Nightwish will have a break of a few months and ReVamp will be touring. Nobody knows what will happen after that. Decisions will be made next year, so that’s very exitcing. Nightwish does have a rehearsal/studio space for July, August and September, so there will be a new album. But I do not know if I will be a part of that.

With ReVamp you started a crowd funding campaign for a tour. You’d think Nuclear Blast has the financial capability for such an enterprise. 
Indeed, that’s what you’d think. But due to decrease in CD sales, the record company has much less money to spend. There is money, but that is for recording and video clips. Even if Nuclear Blast would do a tour proposal, the money of that is recoupable. That means that the band has to recoup it by selling albums. This basically means you pay for the tour yourself and that you never see any money from the record sales. That would not be much of a problem, but we have to pay for a living as well. Many fans liked to be involved with this project and understood that there are not much financial means available. If people would stop free downloading, the problem would be solved and there would be no need for a crowd funding project.

I am not opposed to downloading, but you have to pay for it. It costs money to produce an album. A record is not a free item. I think it is unbelievable that there are no regulations for this. You see the entire industry collapse slowly.

The name of the new ReVamp record is Wild Card, can you explain that? 
I always find it hard to describe an album in one word or sentence. Wild Card means something as a unforeseen, burning factor. It fits with the album because you don’t know what the next song brings. So musically it is a wild card. Also, it is the title of a song.

There is no theme in the album. I had my say about my break down in the three songs The Anatomy of A Nervous Breakdown, each from a different perspective. The song Wolf and Dog is about something else. The balance between the performer/career side of me that goes ‘hunting’ (wolf) and the dog that wants to be safe and comfortable at home. Those two sides are opposite of each other in my world.

Musically, the album is heavier. It is more riff-orientated, more variation in vocals and more playing with the orchestration. The record is written with the other band members, mainly guitarist Jord Otto and keyboard player Ruben Wijga, me and Joost van den Broek as guardian of the process. On the first record I also wrote the music, now I mainly did the vocal lines and lyrics. There are some guest musicians. Marcela Bovio (Stream of Passion) and Daniel de Jongh (Textures) sing with me in the choir. Devin Townsend sings on Neurasthenia and Mark Jansen (Epica) grunts on Misery’s No Crime. I did all the other grunts myself.

You’ve been out of the game for some time due to a burn out and now you are active again with both Nightwish and ReVamp. So can we conclude that you are all better now? 
Yes I am. I can really feel the difference compared to the past years. I also know why I got the burn out and the things I do with Nightwish are not related to that at all. I am a good singer and songwriter, put me on stage and I feel right at home. But don’t let me do management of financial business. I can do it, but it costs too much energy. That was the cause of my break down. Now I know where I want to put my energy in. I take a weekend off now and then, try to avoid things that have a negative energy and I do things differently. I’ll never let my health come second again. You won’t enjoy anything when having a break down. I couldn’t even sing for more than half a year.
