Selvagens, tudo bem com vocês? | Hey, wild ones! How’s everything going?

Vocês sabiam que durante a gravação do primeiro álbum do ReVamp, a parte da bateria foi realizada pelo nosso Matthias Landes, mas pelo baterista Koen Herfst? O mesmo esteve em São Paulo juntamente com o projeto The Gentle Storm, realizado pela conhecida produtora Overload. Koen é conhecido pela sua versatilidade no rock, metal, pop, hip hop e dance. Conhecido pelo seu trabalho com o DJ Armin van Buuren, pela banda de death metal I CHAOS, na banda de trash metal Dew-Scented, entre outros projetos.

Did you know that, during the recording sessions of ReVamp’s first album, the man behind the kit wasn’t Matthias Landes? It was Koen Herfst! And he was in São Paulo playing drums for the band The Gentle Storm in a concert produced by Overload. Koen is well-known for his musical versatility in rock, metal, pop, hip hop and dance music. Also, his works with DJ Armin van Buuren, the death metal band I CHAOS, the trash metal band Deu-Scented and some other projects have drawn a lot of attention as well.

The album features several artists, such as Marcela Bovio (Stream of Passion) on Track 4 and Daniël de Jongh (Textures) on Track 7.

Interview: Irene Jansen

Head up High, my dear

Whenever you talk about musical versatility and vocal range, we know those run in this family. And no, we’re not talking about Floor, but her younger sister, Irene Jansen. In case you don’t know, they performed together several times from “The Black Hole“, by Star One (HERE) to the remarkable, well-known performance in “Who I Am“, by After Forever (HERE) in 2007, for example. Irene also took part in the production for “The Power of Love” with Stream of Passion (HERE) in 2014. She also is acclaimed by her outstanding part in Ayreon, headed by Arjen Anthony Lucassen, having recently played the character “Passion” tremendously well in concert “The Human Equation” by Ayreon in 2015.

After many years, Irene surprises us with her return, in this case, in the studio. ‘Head up High’ had the opportunity to chat with her, and the result of this interview, you see now:

Head up High: You spend quite some time focusing on your studies and your career, with little or no musical activity. Also, more recently you became a mother. How did you make the decision to not make music for a while and focus on these other things in your life? Was it a difficult decision?

Irene: I really wanted to get a degree and make sure I got educated well. Because I was not doing at all bad in music at that time already, it seemed too hard and time-consuming at some point to do both, and do it both really well. I made a conscious choice at this point to focus on one thing first, realising that singing was something I could do my whole life. The time to study was now.

This gave me the opportunity to focus solely on my studies, and my life around it. It was not even that hard to let music be for a bit. I was fully enjoying exploring my other (academic, intellectual and professional) qualities and living life like any other university student. Luckily studying resulted in graduation followed by building a career for myself, and building a life together with my now husband who has been with me and supported me in all those choices from the early beginning.

Head up High: It’s rather common to see female-fronted bands nowadays and an artist always needs to keep trying new things to be a part of what can be considered as innovating in music. From the moment you joined Alarion, what were your contribution to the album “Waves of Destruction” which tell it from the other albums?

Irene: I am mostly known for my powerful singing, which is indeed my forté. However, my voice is capable of more than just this. I can sing more sensitive and mellow too (or even jazzy or bluesy), and this is why, I recorded an acoustic version on this album too.

Head up High: When we talk about your voice, could you tell us a bit more about the techniques you use, your vocals range and what have you been doing to take care of your voice?

Irene: I try to make sure I am properly warmed up before I start singing anything, and focus on breathing correctly. That is all my techniques I can briefly indicate. Singing is complex and I would be lying if I said I would be able to teach or explain singing techniques at length. But I am definitely doing some of it right.

I have no idea of my vocal range other than it doesn’t seem to have a lot of boundaries. I don’t really care about the technicalities to be honest. Singing is feeling and singing comes from inside me. I don’t focus heavily on the theory behind it. I tend to be able to sing what I want to sing. Is know I can do a high G at full voice. That’s high, right?…

I have really not done much at all to maintain my voice during all these years. I almost feel guilty towards all the people in music who works so hard to maintain and train their instrument continuously, where it seems I don’t have to. On the other hand, we’ll never know what I’d be able to do had I indeed trained and maintained…

Head up High: We know heavy metal’s history is composed mostly by men. As a woman who is a part of this history, have you ever felt any kind of prejudice or have you seen any kind of behavior which makes you feel bad or even judged by your gender?

Irene: This is a surprising question to me as a Dutch person maybe. To be brief..NO. I do not recognise this at all.

Entrevista: Irene Jansen

Head up High, my dear 😉

Quando pensamos em versatilidade e alcance vocal, sabemos que isso é de família. Não, agora não estamos falando da Floor, mas de sua irmã mais nova, Irene Jansen. Caso você não saiba, as irmãs dividiram os palcos diversas vezes. Desde a performance em Into The Black Hole – Star One (AQUI) à mais marcante e também conhecida performance de Who I Am – After Forever, (AQUI) no ano de 2007. Participou da apresentação de The Power of Love com o Stream of Passion (AQUI) em 2014, e, claro, conhecida pelo seu excelente trabalho no Ayeron, liderado por Arjen Anthony Lucassen e, recentemente, Irene Jansen realizou uma excelente apresentação em The Human Quantion – Ayeron, interpretando da melhor forma possível, a personagem intitulada de Passion, em 2015.

Após 10 anos, Irene Jansen nos dá essa “bomba”, sobre o seu retorno em estúdio. O Head up High foi atrás, e o resultado você encontra à seguir:

1: Durante esses anos de inatividade (de estúdio, no caso), você mencionou ter focado somente em estudos e trabalho. Dentro deste período ocorreu a maternidade também. Como foi sua forma de pensar para conciliar entre o que ocorre dentro da carreira musical, e a maternidade?

Irene: Eu queria muito ter um diploma e uma boa formação. Como eu estava me saindo bem na carreira musical naquela época, uma hora as coisas me pareceram muito difíceis e muito desgastantes de serem feitas ao mesmo tempo e bem. Eu tomei uma decisão racional de me concentrar em apenas uma coisa, pois eu poderia cantar em qualquer momento da minha vida, mas que a hora de estar era aquela.

Essa decisão permitiu que eu me concentrasse apenas nos meus estudos e tudo o que envolvia esse universo. Pra falar a verdade, não foi difícil deixar a música um pouco de lado. Eu aproveitei ao máximo a oportunidade de explorar as minhas outras qualidades (em termos acadêmicos, intelectuais e profissionais) e viver a vida como uma universitária normal.

Felizmente, eu consegui me formar e construir a minha carreira de maneira sólida, além de construir uma vida junto do meu marido, que esteve comigo e me apoiou nessas decisões todas desde o começo.

2: Hoje em dia é muito comum as bandas serem lideradas por mulheres. Um artista precisa constantemente se reinventar para permanecer dentro do que é considerado inovador. A partir da sua união ao Alarion, quais elementos você trouxe para que o álbum Waves of Destruction se destaque dos demais?

Irene: Sou conhecida pelo meu canto intenso, que é o meu ponto forte. No entanto, ainda sou capaz de fazer mais do que isso, pois consigo cantar em tons mais delicados e suaves também (ou até mesmo mais voltados pro jazz ou blues) e é por isso, inclusive, que eu gravei uma versão acústica de uma música neste álbum.

3: A respeito de sua voz: Poderia nos falar um pouco sobre sua classificação vocal, técnica, alcance e o que você tem feito para manter sua voz protegida?

Irene: Eu procuro me aquecer direitinho antes de começar a cantar qualquer coisa, além de me concentrar na respiração. Estas são, basicamente, as técnicas que recomendo. Cantar é algo complexo e eu estaria mentindo se dissesse que sou capaz de ensinar ou explicar os pormenores das técnicas de canto. Mas com certeza estou seguindo na direção certa.

Não sei o meu alcance vocal, mas parece que não há muitas barreiras para mim. Para ser honesta, não me importo muito com toda a parte técnica. Acho que cantar é sentir e que é algo que vem de dentro de mim mesma, então não costumo me concentrar muito na teoria por trás de tudo isso. Eu costumo conseguir cantar aquilo que quero cantar e sei que consigo alcançar um Sol Maior (G) com toda voz. Isso é um tom alto, certo?

Eu não fiz muita coisa para cuidar da minha voz ao longo dos anos. Me sinto até meio mal quando vejo todas as pessoas no meio musical que tomam extremo cuidado com os seus instrumentos e treinam sem parar, mas eu sinto que não preciso fazer isso. Por outro lado, nunca saberemos do que sou capaz até que tenha treinado e cuidado da minha voz dessa maneira.

4: Temos em vista que o “domínio” do metal é, em sua maioria, masculino. Você, mulher, estando envolvida neste universo, sente algum tipo de preconceito ou comportamento do qual te desagrade ou que discrimine?

Irene: Bom, essa foi uma surpresa pra mim, mas talvez por ser holandesa. De forma resumida: não. Não vejo isso acontecer.

ALARION: Waves of Destruction feat Irene Jansen

Todos conhecem Floor Jansen do After Forever, ReVamp e, hoje em dia, pela fama no Nightwish. Mas quantos de vocês sabem que sua irmã Irene pode cantar como ela? De fato, as irmãs Jansen já dividiram o mesmo palco quando ambas estavam na banda chamada Star One, em 2002. Irene também pode ser ouvida em Gary Hughes: Once And Future King part I e part II (2003), The Human Equation do Ayreon (2004), e em 2015, ela fez seu papel como Passion na performance ao vivo do The Human Equation: The Theater Equation. Mas quando o guitarrísta Bas Willemsen, líder do Alarion pediu à Irene que fizesse 2 músicas para o seu projeto solo, o primeiro álbum Waves of Destruction, ela estava relutante, já que estava focando somente nos estudos e no trabalho nos últimos 10 anos. Mas após ouvir sobre o projeto, e ter ouvido a música, Irene embarcou e gravou os vocais elétricos e versão acústica de Turn Of Fate.

O Indiegogo, campanha crowdfunding para o Waves Of Destruction está sendo executado por um mês e o álbum será lançado em Junho de 2016 através do FREIA Music. Waves Of Destruction contém uma hora de música melódica, sinfônica e intensa. Ocorrerá a participação de muitos músicos excelentes, cantores como Damina Wilson (Threshold), Paul Glandorf (Arjen Lucassen) e claro, Irene Jansen, do qual será a vocalista líder do Alarion na formação ao vivo no show de lançamento no dia 3 de Junho em De Boeederij, Zoetermeer, em The Netherlands com convidado especial End Of The Dream.

Embora Waves Of Destruction não seja inteiramente liderado pelo álbum feminino, continua sendo bastante interessante para os fãs de sinfônico e heavy metal, considerando o fato de sua irmã Floor Jansen ser parte disso.
